For the next few weeks during Sunday Service, we are looking for volunteers to help with setting up and cleaning up the Coffee and Tea Service in the Fellowship Hall. You can choose a setup or cleanup shift, and sign up for once a month or more. We are aiming for an abundance of volunteers to help us express the abundance of hospitality we have for everyone. If you are interested in helping or would like more details, please see Susan Teague after the service.

13th is a documentary directed by Ava DuVernay that examines how slavery’s legacy continues in the United States through the criminal justice system. The film’s title refers to the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery except as punishment for crime—a loophole the documentary argues enabled forced labor to continue through prisons. The film traces how, after the Civil War, Black Americans were disproportionately targeted through laws, convict leasing, disenfranchisement, lynching, and Jim Crow laws. It also explores how policies such as the War on Drugs contributed to mass incarceration, especially in communities of color. 13th argues that both the prison-industrial and detention-industrial complexes profit from incarceration. The documentary received major critical acclaim, earning an Academy Awards nomination for Best Documentary Feature and winning a Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Documentary.

OCSL Prayer Request

In our form of affirmative prayer, we are announcing. We are remembering what is true about the goodness of this life and declaring it to be so. We are particularizing the love of God, the energy of the Universe, in our own life.  ~Scott Awbry

Affirmative prayer is a major spiritual practice at Oakland Center for Spiritual Living. Everyone can learn to pray affirmatively.  Trained Licensed Prayer Practitioners choose to make affirmative prayer their mission. To find a list of all the Practitioners, Click Here.  Practitioners offer prayer to anyone at no cost.  Practitioners are also available to help you explore your beliefs and to help you align those beliefs with spiritual principle. Click the image to download the prayer form and submit your prayer to our prayer team.

Our ongoing coin drive is Abundance in Action. It demonstrates that we are Open at the Top. We affirm that “My giving blesses the world. I allow abundance to flow freely. I joyfully give and receive. I am grateful for the overflow.” There is a coin canister at the back of the sanctuary and one in the lobby. Thanks so much for your generosity.
