Kwanzaa
Starting on December 26th and stretching until the dawn of January’s first light, people gather in unity to mark Kwanzaa’s festivities. It’s a period deeply dedicated to honoring the vast cultural tapestry values and the spirit of togetherness that define African lineage. Dr. Maulana Karenga started Kwanzaa back in 1966, drawing his inspiration from the Swahili words “matunda ya kwanza,” which translates to “first fruits.”
This festivity finds its foundation in Nguzo Saba, representing the Seven Principles.

During Kwanzaa’s people typically gather to light the kinara, which holds seven candles. They exchange tales, indulge in meals inspired by African cuisine, and engage in activities full of creativity and cultural richness. Kwanzaa serves as a period dedicated to celebrating one’s roots.

In the welcoming arms of the New Year, the Burning Bowl Ceremony stands as a beloved ritual. It marks the act of leaving behind what was and stepping into the realm of what could be. This ritual opens the door to introspection, focusing on past experiences, emotions, and behaviors that we’re better off without. It carves out a niche for fresh starts and personal development.
In the midst of the ceremony, individuals jot down their deepest desires to let go of things like fear, anger, doubts, and other heavy loads onto pieces of paper. Following this act, these papers are set aflame in a gesture that symbolizes letting go, making way for people to embrace fresh starts and new beginnings with clear minds and purposeful hearts.
In the ceremony’s later phase people usually focus on their hopes and dreams for the future year. They might jot down their ambitions, dreams, or the good traits they want to grow on a piece of paper so they can remember them all year long.
